Text description provided by the architects. This adaptive re-use of the former Blanton Art Museum space creates a community hub for the Department of Art and Art History. To reinforce the building’s connection to the adjacent performing arts campus, a new entrance was created on the east side of the building (from an existing loading dock, and establishing a shady front door to the building. The new entry and renovated spaces incorporate unique learning spaces and specialization opportunities.
The renovated space will be used for three primary purposes: exhibition space for the display of faculty and student work, administrative offices for the Department, and four studio spaces for graduate students. The project renovated approximately 30,000 square feet, while also upgrading the fire and life safety systems to meet current code, comply with Texas Accessibility Standards, and modernize the building systems. The offcampus Creative Research Lab will also be relocated to the renovated space.
